The Steam Ship Great Britain was the first ever all-iron propeller-driven ship, and the first that was propeller driven. She is now in permanent dry dock in Bristol. The 30 year old deck planks from the initial restoration are being replaced. This is Jarrah wood, a very hard and durable Eucalyptus species from Western Australia. At one time it was used to make railways sleepers, and even pave roads. Now, it is protected species, with no logging allowed. Making objects from the old deck planks brings a particular challenge. I think it is important to show the provenance of the wood by keeping some of the worn deck surface, and incorporate that in a new, functional object.
